Now in its fourteen year, this program has been an exceptional learning experience for novices and experts alike. Here are some comments from people who attended the Thirteenth Annual AIPLA PCT Seminar:

"This is one of the best seminars I've been to in 30+ years of practice, in terms of content, presentation and course materials."

"The presentations were excellent and the delivery by the speakers as well. Thank you for an excellent job."

"The current panel is delightful and work well together. Excellent attention to questions and comments."

Topics discussed include:

How to select a Receiving Office

How to choose an International Searching Authority

How to docket PCT

Whether or not to file a Demand for Preliminary Examination

Avoiding and fixing the most common mistakes made during filing of PCT applications

Picking countries into which to enter the national stage

Reasons to use PCT even if the applicant has no intention of doing any filings outside of the US

The entire PCT process will be discussed in detail, from the initial filing to entries into the national stage.

As each topic is developed, the program will explore strategic decisions and “best practices” for applicants in various stages of development, from startups to large companies. Learn how to extract the most from the PCT system on behalf of applicants that have lots of money and on behalf of applicants that have limited funds. Explore whether it may be better to maximize patent term, or to get a patent issued sooner.

For those who first learned to use PCT years ago, get up to speed about more recent changes such as:

Opportunities to use the PCT system to get faster examination in other applications through the Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH)

Using the Priority Document Access Service to avoid having to physically ship certified copies from place to place

How to e-file post-filing electronic documents at the International Bureau

Choosing whether or not to use Common Application Format

Restoration of priority in case the application has missed the 12-month priority period

Use of supplementary international search to obtain two or more Search Reports

Availability of many types of information in the Patentscope database

Use of RSS data feeds to monitor your own PCT filings and those of competitors

New requirements for entering into EPO from a PCT application

A panel of active PCT patent attorneys from US and Europe is preparing two days of presentations, discussions and debate for your active participation. Representatives of the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) will offer explanations about PCT procedures, reforms, office policies and other invaluable information. This seminar is designed for practicing attorneys, patent agents, paralegals and administrators who are learning about PCT, as well as those who have a deep understanding and experience with the substance of PCT.

The seminar will run two days from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with registration/continental breakfast starting at 8:00 AM and lunch from 12:00 Noon to 1:00 PM. Two breaks and lunch each day are included in your registration cost. The program will be conducted to permit questions as they arise. Active audience participation is encouraged; several topics include discussions by the panelists on strategies and experience in the use of PCT. Comprehensive written materials will be provided. Topics of coverage and detailed schedule are subject to change.

As you can see, the seminar location is walking distance from the USPTO. So book your hotel room for an extra day or two, and interview some cases after the seminar has concluded.

Program chair: Carl Oppedahl

Program vice-chair: Jay Erstling

Your faculty:

Carol Bidwell

Paul Cole

Samson Helfgott

Mike Neas

Carl Oppedahl

Carol Bidwell, consultant, World Intellectual Property Organization
Carol now serves WIPO as a consultant, offering training and outreach for the Patent Cooperation Treaty.
