It starts at full volume. As a general rule we will be saving these files at the highest volume level that does not cause "clipping".

After about fifteen seconds, the theme music drops to a much lower volume.

We insert the announcer intro.

When the announcer finishes, the theme music fades out.

The theme music starts again at normal volume, then fades out.

The announcer announces the lecture.

We insert brief applause that fades out.

The lecture happens and ends.

We insert the applause again. It fades out.

We insert the announcer closing.

Convert the lecture, which is in WMA format, into WAV format. This is done using AudioAlchemy WAV edition. A half-hour lecture (which is a typical length) will start as an WMA file of maybe 6-7 megabytes, and it will get expanded into a WAV file of maybe 300 megabytes. Speaking of which, this may mean that we will want to buy you a few generous sized thumb drives so that you can conveniently store all of this. This could fill up your hard drive in no time.

Find out whether the lecture will be standalone or part of a series. Here I will assume it will be standalone.

You will need an announcer intro and probably an announcer closing. Either you will receive them as WMA files from OPLF or you will record them yourself.

Use the Audacity software to edit things as described below. (In edit/preferences/file-formats we should say "make a copy of the file before editing".)

The result is to be exported as an MP3. Audacity (when the LAME extension is installed) will export MP3 format, which is good.

Add MP3 tags as well as cover art (my photograph) using MP3tag.

In many cases, perhaps most, we will be including a study guide or other PDF file with the MP3 file. In such cases, create a Zip file.

The Zip file will need to be named according to a naming convention.

Quality control. We open the ZIP file. The MP3 file should be in the range of 20 to 30 megabytes.. We extract the MP3 file, and load it to an MP3 player. We listen to the whole program. We look to see if the cover art does actually reach the screen. We look to see if the tags do actually show up on the screen.

x

Project number Lecture (WMA) file received - file name, date and approximate file size

Conversion to WAV file - who did it, date, and approximate file size

Introduction/closing file received - data and approximate file size

Conversion to WAV file - who did it, date, and approximate file size

Study guide or other material received - file name, date, approximate file size

Study guide or other material checked to make sure it is a PDF and can be viewed

WAV Files imported into Audacity project

Duration of lecture in minutes

Quality check - at least a spot check that lecture is okay -who did it, date

Quality check - at least a spot check that intro/closing is okay - who did it, date If need be, splice together the intro with previous intro material

Carry out the mix

Save the project

Export as MP3 file - make note of duration and file size

Quality check - is it all okay? who did it, date

Use MP3Tag to insert ID tags and to insert cover art

Quality check on computer - do the tags appear?

Does the cover art appear? build Zip file with study guide.

Make note of file size

Quality check - will the file unzip?
